Pauline & Graham
We met at university in 1979, with Pauline coming from a childhood spent largely abroad and Graham a ‘local’ boy from Oban. With no strong ties to anywhere in particular, we brought up our four children in Edinburgh and then Suffolk, as Graham’s work took him to London and the life of the 6am commute. Our connections to Sanna go back many decades, but it was only when the last of our children left home that we made the leap to sell up and come and live here.
Building our new home was great fun and not without its challenges (it burnt down just 6 months after we moved in and we had to start again!), but we strongly felt that to live well here, and to fully participate in the community, we should try and make a go of crofting.
Our ambitions for our croft are not set in terms of the returns we make from the land, but in how it helps in attaining an equilibrium in our lives, one that allows us to keep the croft productive while respecting just how important this place is for our community and for the many visitors who create their own special memories here.
The decisions we make - whether about the livestock we keep, the buildings we’ve built, or even about how much time we spend away from here with our growing number of grandchildren - all reflect this, and will hopefully allow us to live happily here for many years to come.
